Holiday Schedules and Upcoming Tournament

Holiday Schedules

I hope everybody is adusting into the tournament portion of our season. For those of you who are new to wrestling, did I mention that it can be chaotic at times? The Hononegah Kids Classic last Sunday started on time and ran very smoothly. Most people were able to make it home and see the second half of the early football games, which is very unusual for a tournament Sunday.

Even though your kids are getting ready for a nice break from school, the kids wrestling season just keeps picking up speed. We will be sending wrestlers to 8 different tournaments over the next 3 weekends. This weekend (12/19 - 12/20), we will have a dual meet team competing at the Wolves Varsity Duals at Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake on Saturday. There will be another large group of wrestlers competing in the Genoa-Kingston tournament on Saturday. On Sunday, there will be a small group of elite wrestlers competing in the Little Celtics Elite tournament and a much larger group of wrestlers competing at the Stillman Valley Holiday tournament. Next weekend, we will have wrestlers competing in the Bandits Holiday Brawl at Belvidere High School on Saturday, 12/26, and the Rockford Bad Boys Invitational at Rockford East High School on Sunday, 12/27. The following weekend, wrestlers will be competing in the Sycamore Good Guy Tournament at Sycamore High School on Saturday, 1/2, and the Wolves Interstate Battery Classic at Prairie Ridge High School on Sunday, 1/3. Good luck to all the wrestlers in their upcoming tournaments. In addition to individual honors, we will also have the opportunity to compete for team awards in many of the upcoming tournaments. We will be sure to display any team awards we win in the wrestling room, so be on the lookout.

We will also continue to practice over the holidays. We certainly understand if people are going to be out of town for the holidays or involved in other family activities that might prevent them from attending every practice. However, I encourage all parents to try to get their young wrestler(s) to practice if you are going to be around. They can learn a lot over the next couple weeks by attending, but they can also forget a lot by not attending.

The practice schedules are as follows:

9 and under wrestlers will practice Monday, December 21st and Monday, December 28th at 6pm

10 and over wrestlers will practice Tuesday, December 22nd and Tuesday, December 29th at 6pm

We will also have practice on Wednesday, December 23rd and Wednesday, December 30th at 6 pm for wrestlers of all ages who can attend

Volunteers Needed

As you are all aware, we will be hosting a second tournament on January 23rd in the main gym. This tournament is for first and second year wrestlers only. Within the next couple of weeks we will be requesting volunteers to help in any of a number of different capacities at the tournament. We will be needing help setting up, tearing down, running the actual tournament and running the concession stand. Your help is greatly needed and greatly appreciated. Sign up sheets will be available outside of the wrestling room after the first of the year. Please see Coach Zalapi for more details.

Upcoming Tournaments

First of all, I would like to point out an error on the tournament schedules that were handed out to parents at the beginning of the year. The schedules you received states that Bantam State will be held on March 20th - March 21st. This is incorrect. The event held on these dates is Midget (Intermediate) State. This is an open tournament for any 8, 9 or 10 year old wrestlers. There will be more information provided on this event in late January or early Februaruy. Banatam State will be held on Sunday, February 14th at Bloom Trail High School. Bantam State is for 6, 7 and 8 year old wrestlers; it is also an open tournament, meaning you do not need to qualify to wrestle. However, it is recommended for wrestlers who are experiencing a reasonable level of success or would like the opportunity to test themselves against other serious to elite wrestlers in their age group. We will provide information on how to sign up for this event in the month of January. You can also go to http://www.crosstownwrestling.com/bantam_state.htm and click on "Bantam Info Letter" for more information.

In addition, to the tournaments listed below, information is forthcoming on the IKWF Kids Open, which will be held in Peoria at the Civic Center on Sunday, January 17th with weigh-ins taking place on Saturday January 16th. The Kids Open is the only IKWF tournament in the entire state on this weekend and is one of the largest kids' wrestling tournaments in the country. It is open to wrestlers ages 7 and up. This is a unique tournament in that there is no coaching allowed. Parents and coaches are restricted to the stands and only wrestlers, tournament workers and officials are allowed on the main floor. Wrestlers in the 7 and 8 age group wrestle in 4-man straight brackets (maximum of 2 matches), while other divisions, with the exception of Elite, wrestle in 8-man straight brackets, double elimination (maximum of 3 matches). Wrestlers competing in the Elite division could wrestle many more matches througout the course of the day. The tournament is a great experience for both kids and their parents. Sign up information for the Kids Open should be available within the next couple of weeks. All signups take place online. The club will secure a block of rooms at a Peoria area hotel that you will be able to reserve to encourage all families to stay in the same location. Information on hotel arrangements will also be provided as it becomes available. Please contact me with any questions regarding the Kids Open.

One other event I would like to make everyone aware of is a dual meet tournament for Intermediate wrestlers (ages 8 - 10). On Saturday, January 30th, we will be taking a dual meet team to the Broncos Intermediate Duals at Barrington High School in Barrington, IL. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the dual meet format, a dual meet team is comprised of a lineup of wrestlers at pre-determined weight classes, one wrestler per weight class. Dual meet competitions feature two teams battling head-to-head, where each team will earn points based on the individual wins their wrestlers earn. Wrestlers can earn 3, 4 or 5 points based on margin of victory or 6 points for a fall (pin). Team points are tallied throughout the dual to determine a team score and, ultimately, the winner of the meet. Due to the fact that only one wrestler at any given weight class can compete in a dual meet, we will be having wrestle-offs to determine who will go to this event. In most cases, we will bring only one wrestler per weight class. However, we will likely bring some alternates to provide us some flexibility in determining the best lineup to field in any given dual. Wrestle-offs will be held in early January during practice. This will provide any wrestler who does not earn a spot on the team the opportunity to sign up to wrestle at another tournament that weekend. The weight classes this tournament are as follows: 49, 52, 55, 58, 62, 66, 70, 74, 79, 84, 89, 95, 101, 101, 122 and 138.

Here is some information on some upcoming deadlines for tournament signups:

Crystal Lake Wizards Vermillion Open:

Payment due date: 12/29/2009

Date of tournament: 2/14/2010

Location: Crystal Lake Central High School

Level: Recommended for wrestlers with at least 1 year of experience

Link to tournament flyer: http://www.hononegahwrestling.com/forms/Kids_Club/2009/Crystal_Lake.pdf

Polo Wrestling Tournament:

Payment due date: 12/30/2009

Date of tournament: 1/30/2010

Location: Polo High School

Level: Open to al levels.
December 1, 2009: Tournament Survival Guide for First Year Wrestling Parents

Last year I posted a blog entry for parents getting ready to experience their first kids wrestling tournament. The feedback I received was that it was very helpful, so I have made a couple of improvements and re-posting it this year:

Many of you will be experiencing your first IKWF wrestling tournament this coming weekend. The first tournament can often be a very confusing, stressful and chaotic experience for wrestlers, but the wrestlers often adjust to the experience better than the parents. The first thing I will tell you to ease any frustration you may experience is do not hesitate to ask questions. Ask questions of your son's coaches. Ask questions of tournament staff. Ask questions of parents of more experienced wrestlers. Do not stop asking questions until you get answers. Other survival tips I can offer are:

<span style="font-size: 9pt;
December 1, 2009: Upcoming Deadlines and Dates

As we rapidly approach the first weekend of tournaments, there are some dates and deadlines everybody should be aware of. Please make sure you take a look at the dates that are provided on the tournament signup sheets that you were given at registration. Tournament signup sheets can also be found on the website at http://www.hononegahwrestling.com/forms/kidsclub_forms.htm.

Also, additional tournament signup sheets are usually available in the black magazine rack that is located in the corner of the wrestling room near the stereo as soon as you walk in to the right. Upcoming tournament signup/payment due dates are as follows:

Stillman Valley Wrestling Club Holiday Tournament:

Payment due by 12/1/2009

Date of Tournament: 12/20/2009

Location: Stillman Valey HS

Level: Open to all levels; If you are not sure if the level of competition at a particular tournament is appropriate for your son, please ask a coach prior to signing up. We will continue to try to provide as much guidance as possible on tournament selection.

Please make sure everybody has Sunday, 12/13 marked on their calendar as the day of our annual Hononegah Kids Classic tournament. We have handed out letters to wrestlers explaining what help we need from parents, as well as what your son is being asked to donate. Every wrestler is asked to donate something to the concession stand. Please refer to your letter to find out specifically what you are being asked to donate. If you have not received a letter, please let John Fenicle or a coach know at practice.

Also, all parents are required to work a shift at the concession stand on the day of the tournament. This will not prevent you from seeing your son wrestle. We always make sure we have enough coverage to allow parents to step out for a few minutes to watch their sons compete. Please look for signups at practice or contact Wendy Shahrikian at threescooters@yahoo.com.

As always, please do not let any question go unasked or unanswered. We have provided you with multiple ways to get in touch with people who are able to answer any question you may have whether it be about tournaments, volunteer opportunities, practice schedules or any other question that pops into your head. You can post a general question using the Kids Club Contact Form on the website at http://www.hononegahwrestling.com/contact_KC.htm. Also, feel free to post a comment here on the blog and someone will be sure to answer your questions.

Thank you for the support you provide the program. Please make every effort to have your son at practice no later than 5:50 pm to allow him time to get his shoes on and get ready to start promptly at 6:00 pm.
CONGRATULATIONS ON A GREAT SEASON

End of the Regular Season

A lot has happened since the last blog entry. The regular season has ended for most wrestlers, while some are still practicing and working hard as they prepare for USAW Folkstyle Nationals and various other offseason tournaments.

I certainly hope that it was a rewarding experience for your son(s). Wrestling is an extremely challenging sport that can elicit the gamit of emotions from elation and the thrill of victory to sorrow and disappointment. Hopefully, your son(s) had a great experience this season, whether it is their first or 10th season in the sport. This was a season of a lot of “firsts” for our club. One of the most significant “first” was that this was the first year we exceeded 100 wrestlers. The added participation came with its share of growing pains, but the coaching staff, wrestlers and parents adapted nicely. As a result, we had many strong performances throughout the season and, most importantly, saw lots of improvement and success on both a team and individual level.

Congratulations to all of our recent state place winners:

Senior:
Manny Silva - 3rd Place (Senior - 122 pounds)
Joey Welsh - 6th Place (Senior - 156 pounds)

Novice:
Brady Powers - 6th Place (Novice - 66 pounds)
Tyler DeMoss - 7th Place (Novice - 101 pounds)

Midget:
Blake Zalapi – 3rd (138 pounds)
Christian Fausel – 5th (68 pounds)
Jordan Shahrikian – 6th (122 pounds)
Anthony Cassioppi – 8th (115 pounds)

Bantam State:
Nick Carter - 3rd Place (70 pounds)
Blaine Bohnenkamp - 3rd Place (49 pounds)
Kaleb Etnyre - 5th Place (103 pounds)
Zach Fausel - 5th Place (52 pounds)
Benjamin Zalapi - 7th Place (67 pounds)
Brandt Hixson - 8th Place (58 pounds)

Congratulations to other state qualifiers: Jordan Pierson (Senior - 89 pounds), Vincent Anderson (Novice - 115 pounds) and Keegan Powers (Novice - 66 pounds)

Congratualations also go out to other Midget and Bantam State participants: Xander Schnake (Bantam – 52 pounds), Tim Tichgelaar (Bantam – 58 pounds), Santonio Jackson (Bantam – 64 pounds), Giovanni Cassioppi (Bantam – 61 pounds), Drew Smith (Midget – 62 pounds), Josh Lester (Midget – 79 pounds), Hunter Comstock (Midget – 95 pounds), Tyler Brugman (Midget – 101 pounds), Sylvester Vijil (Midget – 95 pounds)

End of Season Pizza Party

Please make sure you attend the pizza party on Tuesday, March 31st at 6 pm in the High School Cafeteria to join us in celebrating an awesome season. The night will include recognition of all wrestlers, presentation of special awards (Most Valuable and Most Improved) and, of course, pizza.
If you have not already done so, please let John Fenicle know how many from your family will be attending: (Cell: 815-988-4153, e-mail: john.fenicle@hs.utc.com or tmrclean@aol.com)

Turn in Singlets

If you have not done so already, all singlets must be turned in immediately. If singlets are not turned in prior to the pizza party, your $50 deposit will be used to purchase replacements. Please contact John Fenicle to arrange a time to take care of this if you have not already done so.

Off Season Open Wrestling Tournaments

Even though the actual season has ended, there are still plenty of opportunities to wrestle almost every weekend for those who still have the itch. Off season tournaments are a great way to get some additional mat time, keep some of the stuff you learned fresh and have some fun in a low pressure, yet competitive setting. These competitions are Open tournaments, meaning you compete on an individual basis.

For anyone who is interested in competing in offseason tournaments, I will provide periodic updates on the blog, notifying all of upcoming tournaments and providing links to signup forms when possible. Also, the most comprehensive list of offseason tournaments can be found at the following website: http://www.forcewrestling.com/OFF-SEASON.html
As you can see, there are tournaments almost every weekend well into the summer. Most off season tournaments do not require singlets. However, if you plan on going to a few, it would not be a bad idea to purchase one. You can find singlets at numerous online wrestling supply stores. Just Google “wrestling singlets” and you will find numerous sites that sell singlets. Some to consider are All American Wrestling Supply, Dick Pond Athletics, Wrestlinggear.com, WWSport.com, and WrestlersExpress.com. You can also often find used singlets on eBay.

Hononegah Kids Wrestling is Now on Facebook

The wrestling club now has a group on Facebook called Hononegah Kids Wrestling. For those of you who are not on Facebook, you will have to join to become a member of the group. You only need an active e-mail address to create a Facebook account. It is free to join and you can be as active or non-active as you would like.

The Facebook group is a great communication and networking tool that provides us the ability to attach and share photos, attach video, share links, report results, announce upcoming events, etc. The Facebook group has a discussion board where anyone can start a discussion thread or reply to an existing thread. There is also a wall that you can write on to communicate to others in the group. It is very easy to use and is a great way to keep in touch throughout the year and share news and information that might be of interest to others.

You can access the group via the following URL:
http://www.facebook.com/groups.php?ref=sb#/group.php?gid=74537691354
Accessing the link will also give you the option to create a Facebook account. We hope to see all of you become members of the group.

Hononegah Kids Club Have Very Strong Showings at IKWF Kids Open and Marengo Cabin Fever Tournaments

The Hononegah Kids Club wrestlers have continued to have strong performance over the past two weekends.

On Sunday January 18, twenty Hononegah wrestlers competed in the IKWF Jon Davis Kids Open with almost 1500 other wrestlers from across the state. This tournament is unique in a number of ways. Wrestlers get the opportunity to compete in a large venue in front of a crowd of thousands of people. They get to see competition from other areas of the state. All Hononegah wrestlers go down the day before the actual tournament and stay at a hotel, providing a great time to bond and get to know each other for parents and kids alike. Finaly, no coaching is allowed on the floor of the arena.
All of our athletes wrestled hard with 15 coming home with awards. Place winners were as follows:

Tyler Demoss - 2nd place

Joey Welsh - 5th place

Benjamin Zalapi - 1st place

Manny Silva - 5th place

Nick Carter, 1st place

Boston Nimmer - 6th place

Brady Powers - 6th place

Keegan Powers - 2nd place

Hayden Brown - 4th place

Anthony Silva - 6th place

Braden Zalapi - 3rd place

Jordan Shahrikian - 3rd place

Blake Zalapi - 3rd place

Fernie Silva - 5th place

Anthony Cicero - 4th place

Congratulations to all!

On Sunday January 25, twenty-one Hononegah wrestlers attended the Marengo Cabin Fever tournament at Marengo High School. We hoped to bring a much larger group of wrestlers to this tournament to defend the team title that we won at last year’s tournament. In spite of our small numbers, we knew we had a strong group that was more than capable of repeating the performance of last year if they wrestled up to their capabilities.

Similar to other tournaments that have team competitions, all teams are asked to designate 10 wrestlers as team scorers. The placements of these 10 wrestlers are used to determine team points as follows:
- 1st place earns 10 team points
- 2nd place earns 8 team points
- 3rd place earns 6 team points
- 4th place earns 4 team points
It was somewhat tough to choose 10 wrestlers out of our 21, but at the same time we knew that almost any combination of 10 of our 21 wrestlers were capable of giving us the points we needed to bring home a trophy. However, our actual results exceeded even our own expectations.
For a second consecutive year, we had dominating performances at all levels, enough to earn us 92 out of a possible 100 team points. As I handed our score sheet to the head table, the table worker’s eyes went wide just prior to asking me if I was sure of my math.
As the announcer announced the results of the team competition, our wrestlers who were still there waited in anticipation as they heard, “In 3rd place, with 86 points……the Cary Matmen. In 2nd place with 88 points…..the Dundee Highlanders. And, your 2009 Marengo Cabin Fever champions, winning the team title for the second straight year, with 92 point……Hononegah!”
We all proceeded to the awards table to claim a very impressive trophy that stands about 4 feet tall. Make sure you stop into the wrestling room this week to take a look at the trophy. It’s definitely a nice addition to our collection that continues to grow at a steady rate.
Our individual performances for the tournament were as follows:

Brady Powers – 1st place

Keegan Powers – 2nd place

Braden Zalapi – 1st place

Blake Zalapi – 2nd place

Ben Zalapi – 2st place

Dominic Cascio – 3rd place

Anthony Casio – 1st place

Giovanni Cassioppi – 1st place

Anthony Cassioppi – 1st place

Louden Schnake – 4th place

Xander Schanke – 1st place

Ryan Spranger – 2nd place

Hunter Comstock – 4th place

Josh Lester – 2nd place

Seth Wisowaty – 1st place

Jordan Shahrikian – 3rd place

Zach Mooney – 1st place

Thomas Rollette – 3rd place

Kameron VanTassel – 3rd place

Tyler Brugman – Injury Default

Josh Willi – 1st place

Congratulations to all who wrestled and coached.
Lastly, I would like to thank the many people who volunteered to work our first ever beginners tournament on Saturday January 24. The tournament was a huge success and we could not have done it without all of the wonderful volunteers.
Almost 250 wrestlers competed in the tournament from numerous clubs across the northern part of the state. Every wrestler had at least 2 matches. Our club had over 60 1st/2nd year wrestlers compete. Many wrestlers picked up their first wins, first pins, first 1st place finishes, etc. The great performances were many and all kids should be proud of how they wrestled.

The tournament could not have run more smoothly, with the final matches ending just after 12:30 pm. At the end of the tournament, our outstanding volunteers worked together to have everything torn down and put away by about 1 pm. We received compliments and thanks from numerous coaches and parents on the event. Kudos to everyone involved in making this tournament a success.

Hononegah Kids Wrestling Club Collects Hardware at Recent Tournaments:

It has been quite a while since the last blog entry, and much has happened since. We have passed the halfway point of the season and the fruits of our hard work have definitely begun to pay off with many strong tournament performances at all levels over the past month.
As many of you know, in addition to individual awards many of the tournaments we compete in also have team competitions. These tournaments typically award trophies or plaques for the top 3 teams. The way these team competitions typically work is clubs are asked to designate a list of 10 – 12 wrestlers as team scorers prior to the start of the tournament. The wins and losses of these wrestlers are then tallied to give each team a point total that is used to determine placement in the team standings. This method removes the advantage that teams with a large number of wrestlers would otherwise have. Last year, we were able to realize team success in one tournament in capturing the team title at the Marengo Cabin Fever Open. This year, I am pleased to say that we have already far surpassed the success of last season in terms of # of team awards with the following accomplishments in the first half of the season alone:

Wolves Varsity Duals on December 20th: This was a dual meet tournament that we were invited to this year hosted by the Crystal Lake Wolves. There were a total of eight teams in this tournament. Each team wrestled 3 dual meets with 18 weight classes. We brought our best wrestlers across all 18 weight classes, as well as a handful of quality second string wrestlers to compete. We were seeded fourth in this tournament and brought home the 3rd Place Trophy. Due to our seed, we drew the #1 seeded team in the United Southern All Stars, an all-star team from southern Illinois loaded with numerous state qualifiers and place winners, in the semi-final dual. We wrestled very competitively and lost a tough match to this team. Along the way we defeated Richmond in the preliminary match and the Maine Eagles for 3rd place.

Genoa-Kingston on December 20th: We sent a group of 22 wrestlers to this tournament made up of younger wrestlers and 2nd/3rd string wrestlers who did not join the dual meet team at Crystal Lake. This tournament showed the depth and young talent we have in our club as we took home the 2nd Place Plaque. Our 10 designated team scorers in this tournament won 26 of 29 matches earning 7 first place and 3 second place finishes. 22 of our 26 wins were by pin. The first place team, Dekalb Wrestling Club, also finished with 7 first place and 3 second place finishes. However, they won the first place plaque by virtue of having one more win on the day than we did winning 27 or 30 matches.
Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament on December 21st: We had about 35 wresters compete in this tournament across all levels. There were two different team competitions at this tournament: one for tots, bantams and midgets and the other for Novice and Seniors. We designated groups of 10 wrestlers from each group as team scorers. This tournament was very challenging for our wrestlers. Many did not place as high as we expected. At the end of the day, we did not feel very confident of our chances in the team competition, so we left before the team scores were announced. Much to our surprise, we were notified the next day that we won the 3rd Place Trophies in both age groups.
Wolves Interstate Battery Classic on January 4th: We brought 17 wrestlers to this very tough tournament that had a lot of tough competition that we don’t often see, such as Gomez Wrestling Academy, Lakeland Predators, Libertyville Wildcats, Mad Dog Wrestling and many other talented clubs from the Chicago suburbs. We designated 12 wrestlers as team scorers. This tournament proved to be extremely tough for us with only 2 of our 12 wrestlers taking first place (Nick Carter and Blake Zalapi). Once again, we left the tournament prior to team scores being announced, assuming that we were not close in the team competition. Once again, I received a pleasantly surprising phone call from the Wolves tournament director on Monday morning telling me that we won the 3rd Place Trophy, finishing behind the Lakeland Predators and Gomez Wrestling Academy.
Mid-Season North Section Preview on January 11th: We brought 53 wrestlers to this tournament, our 2nd largest number of entries this season. This tournament is unique in that it contains 8 person brackets for Bantams and Tots and true state weight classes for Midgets, Novice and Seniors, resulting in brackets as large as 16. Team awards were given for the top 3 teams in each of four groups: Bantams/Tots, Midgets, Novice and Seniors. Unlike other tournaments, the results of all wrestlers were used to determine team points and final team standings. Our results for the tournament were as follows:

Bantams/Tots: 2nd Place Trophy – Outstanding job by a group made up of many first and second year wrestlers.

Midgets: 4th place – we fell just short of winning a trophy here. Great job by the 9 – 10 year old wrestlers, nonetheless. We have seen a lot of improvement from our 9 and 10 year olds.
Novice: 2nd Place Trophy – Many wrestlers rose to the occasion to contribute here. We were missing perhaps our best Novice wrestler due to injury. Had he wrestled, we very well could have taken 1st in this age group.

Seniors: 3rd Place Trophy – Our smallest group of wrestlers by far is our 13 and 14 year olds. We had 9 senior wrestlers wrestle hard and win some very tough matches to accumulate enough team points to outdistance many teams who brought more wrestlers. Great job, Seniors!

Overall Team Standings: This tournament also awards a trophy for the Grand Champion across all divisions. We placed second in the overall team standings, falling just short of the Crystal Lake Wizards for the Grand Champion trophy. Wait ‘til next year!

<span style="font-size: 7.5pt;
Upcoming Tournament Registration Deadlines

There are a number of registration deadlines for future tournaments in the upcoming weeks that everybody should be aware of. Please review the detail below and talk with a coach if you have any questions about a tournament you are considering registering your son for.

Remember, coaches' recommend that all wrestlers compete in a minimum of four tournaments throughout the season. Wrestlers with 2 or more years of experience often do more. For parents of wrestlers who are only doing 4 or 5 tournaments, we strongly recommend that you spread the tournaments out over the course of the season. This provides your son the opportunity to see progress over the course of the season and to validate the benefit of practice and hard work. Even if the win/loss results don't differ too much, your son's improvement should be evident as you compare how he looks in his first tournament to how we wrestles at the end of the year.

Below is a listing of the remaining tournaments that we currently have on our schedule. Please note the recommended levels as you consider whether or not to sign your son up.

Sauk Valley Wrestling Club Tournament:

Payment due by 12/22/2008

Date of Tournament: 1/3/2009

Location: Newman High School, Sterling, IL

Level: Open to all levels. This is the first year we are attending this tournament.
Tournament Survival Guide for First Year Wrestling Parents

Many of you experienced your first IKWF wrestling tournament this past weekend, while others will experience it this coming Sunday. The first tournament can often be a very confusing, stressful and chaotic experience for wrestlers, but it usually more so for the parents than the wrestlers.

Sit with other Hononegah parents and get to know them: You will likely be spending a lot of hours in gyms in the coming months. The experience is much more enjoyable for everybody involved when there are people to talk to and when we all cheer on each other.

Pack a cooler with something healthy for you and your son(s) to eat: It definitely can be enjoyable to sample the fine cuisine at all of the tournaments your son attends, but you will also come to find that it can get rather pricey over the course of the season, especially on long days. Also, concession stand food is not always the best way to fuel a young wrestler’s body. Wrestling requires a lot of energy and junk food can make your son feel sluggish and tired.

Find out early in the day how the tournament will be run:

Will there be a bullpen that wrestlers will be required to report to? or

Will your son be wrestling on the same mat the entire day?

Where will the brackets be posted?

How many matches will your son have? (Keep in mind your son may not have as many matches as other wrestlers if he does not have a full bracket)

How many rounds of wrestling will there be? (Most tournaments will have 3 rounds, but this could vary up or down)

Will awards be handed out matside after your son’s last match, or will he have to go somewhere else to get his award? (Be aware that the answer to this question sometimes doesn’t come until the final round approaches)

Learn how to read the different types of brackets that are used in wrestling tournaments. Most tournaments use 4 man round robin brackets, where all wrestlers in a bracket will compete against each other over 3 rounds, where each wrestler has one match per round. The other most common type of bracket is a 4 man straight bracket, where wrestlers are paired in 2 matches the first round. In the second round the winners of the first round matches in a given bracket will wrestle each other, while the losers will also wrestle each other.

Identify all of the Hononegah coaches that are present at the tournament. As much as we would like for all faces to be familiar to your son, sometimes your son may be coached at a tournament by a coach he has not gotten to know in practice. Please know that in spite of this, these coaches are willing and able to help your son and answer all of your questions.

Be positive TO your son and be positive FOR your son. Wrestling can be a great experience for you and your son. However, there are some growing pains that parents and wrestlers often have to experience. A little patience and tolerance go a long way toward getting past these experiences.

Encourage your son to use down time wisely. There is a lot of free time between weigh-ins and when the tournament begins and between your son’s matches.

Make sure your son participates in formal and informal warm-ups before the tournament begins. He should find a partner close to his own size and drill lightly before the tournament begins. Coaches will encourage this with kids who are out on the mat before the tournament begins.

Discourage horseplay. Believe it or not, there is more opportunity for injury when kids are running around the gym and the school than when they are drilling on the mat.

Encourage your son to watch his teammates compete while he is waiting to wrestle. A lot of learning can take place by watching, too.

Don’t hesitate to bring activities for your son to take advantage of in between matches (books, videos, mp3 players, video games, homework, etc.)

Help your son keep track of his belongings, especially his headgear. He will need his headgear for every match and every tournament. It is easy to misplace or mix up with someone else.

This by no means prepares you for every bizarre or confusing situation that may occur in your first few tournaments, but hopefully it is a good start. Kids wrestling is definitely different than most other sports your son may have experienced, but it can be very enjoyable and very rewarding once you get past the unknowns.

Please post any comments or questions you may have.

-Coach Vince (vmzalapi@yahoo.com)

Now that we are entering our 3rd week of practice, hopefully everybody is getting used to or re-acquainted with our routines. I think we have all observed that the wrestling room is very crowded. For those of you are returning, I"m sure you've noticed that we are much more crowded than in years past. Even though our numbers are up, we have still been able to maintain a reasonable amount of intensity, instruction and structure to the first few weeks that will certainly prepare our 100+ wrestlers for our first tournaments coming up in less than 2 weeks.

This week our 10 and up age group will be practicing only one day, due to Thanksgiving. Please make every attempt to be at practice on time and ready to make the most out of this practice. When we come back next week, we will have only 2 more practices to get ready for our first weekend of tournaments. On Sunday 12/7, some of you will be attending the Xtreme Challenge in Byron, while some of our elite wrestlers will be at the Neuqua Valley Invitational. In addition, some will be attending the the Junior Golden Eagles tournament on Saturday 12/6. We need to get the most out of our limited practice time to be prepared for these tournments.

I'd also like to encourage all parents to taken in some High School Varsity meets this year whenever you can. The High School Schedule can be found at http://www.hononegahwrestling.com/HSschedule.html. The Varsity dual meet schedule will kickoff this weekend with a Triangular meet at East High School in Rockford against East and Auburn.

Blog entries will become more frequent as we get into the heart of the season and there are more results, deadlines and information to announce. Please do not hesitate to leave a comment with any thoughts, questions or discussion points you might have.

-Coach Vince

Welcome to the 2008-2009 Wrestling Season

This is the first blog entry for the new Hononegah Wrestling Blog. We are looking forward to a great season this year. We had record turnouts at our Kids Club registration days last week as word has spread about the success and rewards of the Hononegah wrestling program at all levels.

Things get underway Wednesday night (11/5) with our annual Potluck dinner in the HHS lunch room. The event starts at 6:00 pm. All levels kids through HS are invited to attend. Please bring a dish to pass.

Kids Club practices begin the week of 11/10. Ages 9 and under will continue to practice on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Ages 10 and up will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Once Middle School Season begins, Middle School wrestlers will also practice on Wednesdays. More to come on start dates and times for Middle School wrestling.

There will also be a mandatory parents meeting at 6:00 pm on Monday, 11/10 in the Metal Gym for all Kids Club parents. Please be there promptly at 6:00 pm and plan on being there until about 6:30.

There are many things that we are excited about for the upcoming season. For the first time ever, we will be competing in some Dual Team tournaments. We have a Dual Team tournament on Saturday, 12/20 at Prairie Ridge HS for wrestlers 8 years and up. We have numerous weight classes we will need to fill and we will try to go at least 2 deep at each weight where ever possible. Also, we will be participating in the IKWF Dual Team State series for the first time this year. This team will be made up of Novice (10 - 12) and Senior (12 - 14) wrestlers.

In addition, we will hold two tournaments this year. The Hononegah Kids Classic will be held on Sunday, 12/14, and we will be holding a Beginners tournament on Satuday, 1/24 for 1st and 2nd year wrestlers.

Please take note of deadlines to turn money in for upcoming tournaments. We will do our best to notify you and remind you of upcoming due dates. There are tournaments every weekend that we attend. It is not mandatory to attend all tournaments. However, the coaching staff strongly suggests that all wrestlers try to compete in a minimum of 4 tournaments througout the season. If you are uncertain on what tournaments to attend, please talk to your son’s coaches for guidance. They will definitley have a point of view on which tournaments are best for your son’s level of experience.

We will also be scheduling scrimmages for some of our younger wrestlers with other clubs in the area. These scrimmages are great opportunities to get some mat time outside of practices and additional matches without having to spend an entire day at a tournament. We will let you know about these scrimmages a couple of weeks in advance of when they will happen. Look for them to happen on Saturdays and possibly a weeknight here or there at various locations througout the area.

Once again, welcome to another great season of wrestling! As always, please let us know any ideas you have on how we can better help your son and the wrestling program as a whole succeed.

-Coach Vince
